Headless WooCommerce, our own store

A grocery store that loads like an app, on plain WooCommerce

MagniKart is our own neighbourhood grocery store in Bhubaneswar, India, with about 5,300 products, a physical counter running our MagniPOS system, and home delivery. Its old shop was a conventional theme. We rebuilt the storefront as a headless app on top of WooCommerce, without changing how the shop itself is run.

WordPress and the POS still run the shop

Why headless

Grocery orders are small, frequent and mostly placed on phones, so the storefront had to feel like an app. The rest of the business, works well on WordPress: stock, prices, orders and the in-store counter all run through WooCommerce and our MagniPOS system. So we kept WordPress as the back office and replaced only the part customers see.

What we built

  • A mobile-first storefront app that talks to the WooCommerce Store API for the catalogue, cart and checkout.
  • Phone OTP login: customers sign in with a one-time SMS code. Staff and admin accounts cannot log in this way.
  • Reward points shared between the counter and the app, redeemable at checkout, with points restored automatically if an order is cancelled.
  • A location check before shopping, so customers outside the delivery area are told up front instead of at checkout.
  • Fast search with a cached index, synonyms for the names people actually type, and a report of what customers searched for.
  • Fresh fruit and vegetables bought from the market on order: mixed carts are split automatically into a same-day order and a next-day fresh order.
  • Product and category pages kept at their original addresses, served with proper titles, descriptions and product data, so the sitemap and search listings stay valid.

Performance

Public catalogue requests are cached and refreshed whenever stock or products change. Lighthouse scores the storefront 98 on mobile and 100 on desktop.

Results

  • A storefront that feels like an app on an ordinary phone connection.
  • Nothing changed for the staff: stock, orders and the counter work exactly as before.
  • A switch that can return the old shop instantly if ever needed.
